Overview

What Is USFDA Registration?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires facilities that make, pack or store certain products for the US market to register with it. Without a valid registration, your shipments can be held at the US border.

Good to know: FDA registers facilities; it does not "certify" them. People often say "USFDA certificate", but it means registration, not an FDA approval.

Does the US FDA issue a certificate?

No. FDA does not certify facilities or approve most food products. It registers facilities. Any “FDA certificate” is a registration confirmation, not an approval by FDA.

When must food facility registration be renewed?

Every two years, between 1 October and 31 December of even-numbered years. For this cycle, the deadline is 31 December 2026. A registration not renewed by then is treated as expired.

Is there a government fee for FDA food facility registration?

No. FDA charges no fee for food facility registration or renewal.

Do Indian exporters need a US Agent?

Yes. Every foreign food facility must name a US Agent who lives or has a place of business in the USA, to be FDA’s point of contact.
